African Swine Fever (ASF) Detection

You are no doubt aware of the recent outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Gauteng and surrounding provinces as well as China and Europe. ASF is endemic to South Africa and for example is endemic to the warthog population which acts as a host. In pigs, ASF is a highly virulent virus that requires the affected farm to have to destroy their affected pigs to ensure that the spread of the disease is managed. To date the affected outbreaks have been restricted to informal pig farmers with poor biosecurity controls and as such has not affected our large scale commercial farming base which has world-class biosecurity standards in place. ASF does not pose any risk to the consumer and eating pork from an ASF infected pig will not affect a human in any way. The risk lies with the pig farming community – the spread of this disease can be catastrophic to an affected farm or pig farming area.

As a business we continue to take the safety of our food and Food Safety systems very seriously. Testament to this is our FSSC22000 Food Certification which is the global food safety benchmark. We are also a certified ZA export facility. On arrival at our facility, both carcasses and pigs to be slaughtered are inspected by highly qualified independent Meat Inspectors both pre and post mortem for any signs of myriad symptoms including ASF. In addition, all farmers trucks are sanitised when leaving the facility.

With the detection and spread of ASF to a fourth province since April of this year, we would like to re-affirm that both carcasses and pigs for slaughter sourced by Lynca Meats come from farms which are compartmentalised export farms. This means that they are strictly controlled by both Pork 360 and DAFF through rigorous procedures and audits. As such serology tests are completed through DAFF for ASF, CSF (Classic Swine Fever) and PRRS (Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome) regularly to ensure that all pigs that we procure are free from ASF, amongst other diseases.
